British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), publicly financed company that runs all radio and 2 of the 3 television networks in Britain. The BBC first went on the air in 1922. Regular television programs, which began in 1936, were interrupted by World War II, but resumed in 1946. The BBC provides a wide range of news programs, documentaries, plays, comedies, concerts, and school programs, and is known for the excellence of its panel programs and educational broadcasts. The BBC has a considerable overseas audience.
