Brighton

Brighton (pop. 143,000), popular English seaside resort on the south coast, 51 mi (82 km) south of London. The town first gained popularity when an 18th-century doctor claimed its seawater had curative power. In 1783 the Prince of Wales (later George IV) visited the town. The onion-domed Royal Pavilion was built to his orders. Originally in classical style, it was rebuilt in 1815 by John Nash, in the exotic style of Indian Mogul architecture.
