Breakwater

Breakwater, timber, masonry, or stone barrier constructed to give protection from heavy seas. Breakwaters built at right angles to the shore are called jetties; those built parallel with the shore (providing additional protection for a harbor), with a wharf on the sheltered side, are called moles.
