Breadfruit

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis), tree of the mulberry family, whose fruit is the staple diet in the South Pacific. Breadfruit trees are now seen in much of tropical America. The fruit is melonlike, 8 in (20 cm) across, and is protected by a thick rind that can be woven into cloth. The pulp, which tastes like potato meal, is eaten cooked, and may be ground to make a flour.
