Brady, Mathew B. (1823–96), U.S. photographer of historic events and eminent people, including 18 U.S. presidents. He spent his fortune in hiring 20 teams of photographers to take over 3,500 shots covering almost every big battle of the Civil War, a project that bankrupted him. His most famous photographs are those of Lincoln and of the battles of Bull Run and Gettysburg.
