Boiler, device for heating water to produce steam. The 2 main types of boiler are the fire-tube, in which hot gases are passed through tubes surrounded by water, and the water-tube, in which water is passed through tubes surrounded by hot gases. Fuels include coal, oil, gas, and nuclear energy.
