Boeotia



Boeotia, region of ancient Greece, north of the Gulf of Corinth in central Greece. The area of 1,100 sq mi (2,850 km) was rich farmland. The chief city, Thebes, dominated the Boeotian League, formed to protect the area from encroachment by other city-states. The home of the poets Hesiod and Pindar, Boeotia later became part of the modern Greek state.
