Bern



Bern, or Berne (pop. 138,600), capital city of Switzerland and of Bern canton. It lies on the Aare River in German-speaking west-central Switzerland. It is an important commercial, industrial, and cultural center and the headquarters of some major international communications organizations. Bern was founded in 1191 and retains many old buildings.
