Bennington



Bennington, town in southwestern Vermont, about 35 mi (56 km) northeast of Albany, N.Y. In 1777, during the Revolutionary War, the Green Mountain Boys defeated the British troops under General John Burgoyne in an important battle at Bennington. A granite monument just outside the town commemorates this action. Other historical landmarks are the first schoolhouse in Vermont, William Lloyd Garrison's printing shop, and several colonial buildings. The town has a historical museum. Bennington is now a manufacturing town, producing clothing, plastics, pottery, and precision machinery.
