Belmopan

Belmopan (pop. 4,000), capital city of Belize, a country on the Caribbean coast. Belmopan, the capital since 1970, is a new city built approximately 50 mi (80 km) inland from Belize City, the former capital, which was plagued by devastating hurricanes. Many of the buildings in Belmopan are adorned with ancient Mayan designs. The country's most modern hospital and many government buildings are located in the city.
