Belém



Belém (pop. 758,100), capital of the state of Pará in northern Brazil. Situated on the Pará River, about 90 mi (145 km) from the Atlantic coast, Belém is the commercial center of the mouth of the Amazon River basin. Among its industries are tourism, rubber, timber, cacao, and Brazil nuts.
