Saint Thomas à Becket



Becket, Saint Thomas à (1118?–70), martyr and archbishop of Canterbury. He first served as chancellor under Henry II, becoming a close friend. In 1162 he was appointed archbishop of Canterbury. After years of dissension with the king, in 1170 he was murdered in the cathedral of Canterbury by four knights inspired by some rash words of the king.
