Bear Flag Republic

Bear Flag Republic, republic declared in 1846 by U.S. settlers in Sacramento Valley, Cal., who rejected Mexican rule. The explorer John C. Fremont aided the insurgents, but the republic collapsed after the outbreak of the Mexican War in May 1846. In 1848 California ceded to the U.S.
