Bayard



Bayard, family name of politicians, statesmen, and U.S. senators from Delaware. James Asheton Bayard (1767–1815) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1797 to 1803 and as a U.S. senator from 1805 to 1813. His two sons, Richard Henry (1796–1868) and James Asheton (1799–1880), and his grandson, Thomas Francis (1828–98), also represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate. Thomas Francis Bayard served as secretary of state from 1885 to 1889 and was U.S. ambassador to Britain from 1893 to 1897. His son, also named Thomas Francis (1868–1942), served in the U.S. Senate in the 1920s.
