Marquis de Montcalm



Montcalm, Marquis de (1712–59), French general, military commander in Canada from 1756 during the French and Indian Wars. He captured Fort Ontario (1756) and Fort William Henry (1757) and repulsed the British at Ticonderoga (1758). He was defeated and killed on the Plains of Abraham (Sept. 13, 1759), while unsuccessfully defending Quebec against the British General James Wolfe, who was also killed.
