Duke of Monmouth



Monmouth, Duke of (1649–85), illegitimate son of King Charles II of England. When he did not inherit his father's throne, he invaded England (1685) with his own army and demanded that his father's successor, James II, relinquish the crown to him. Monmouth's army lost the battle that ensued. He was captured and executed.
