Meiji



Meiji (1852–1912), emperor of Japan (1867–1912); his given name was Mutsuhito. The long isolation of Japan under the shoguns ended in 1868 with the restoration of imperial power. Meiji guided the transformation of Japan from a feudal empire into a modern industrial nation with a central administration. The court was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo.
