Measuring worm

Measuring worm, also known as inchworm or looper, hairless caterpillar, moth larvae found on every continent. Measuring worms move by extending their front end and holding on with their legs, then bringing up the rest of the body in a loop so that the rear end practically meets the front end. They move in this way because they have only 2 or 3 (rather than the usual 5) pairs of leglike structures on the back part of their bodies. Many measuring worms are difficult to detect when not moving, as they often resemble twigs and rest in twiglike positions.
