George Gordon Meade



Meade, George Gordon (1815–72), Union general of the U.S. Civil War. He performed with distinction in 1862 at the Seven Days Battles, Bull Run, and Antietam, and afterwards at Fredericksburg and Chancellorville. As commander of the Army of the Potomac, he won the Battle of Gettysburg. Criticized for not following up his victory, he kept his command under Ulysses S. Grant's direction.
