McCarran, Patrick Anthony (1876–1954), U.S. Democratic senator from Nevada (1933–54). He sponsored 2 controversial measures, the McCarran-Wood Act (1950), which required the registration of communists, and the McCarran-Walter Act (1952), which tightened controls over aliens and immigrants.
