Mayo



Mayo, U.S. family of surgeons. William Worrall Mayo (1819–1911) founded St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn. (1889), which was to become the famous Mayo Clinic. His sons, William James Mayo (1861–1939), and Charles Horace Mayo (1865–1939), traveled to many countries to discover new surgical techniques and to attract foreign surgeons to the clinic; in 1915 they set up the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. Charles's son, Charles William Mayo (1898–1968), was also a distinguished surgeon.
