Martha's Vineyard



Martha's Vineyard, island off the coast of southeast Massachusetts. About 100 sq mi (260 sq km) in area, it is separated from Cape Cod by Vineyard Sound. Named by Barthelomew Gosnold (1602), it was settled in 1632. A major whaling center in the 18th and 19th centuries, it is now a popular summer resort.
