James Wilson Marshall



Marshall, James Wilson (1810–85), discoverer of gold in California. On Jan. 24, 1848, while building a sawmill for John Sutter on the American River, Marshall found several gold nuggets in the water. Word of the discovery spread quickly and triggered the California Gold Rush of 1849.
