Mantid

Mantid, or praying mantis, large predatory insect of the Mantidae family (or order Mantodea). Most species are native to tropical and subtropical climates, although some, including varieties that have been introduced in North America, are found in temperate zones. The nickname “praying mantis” is suggested by the posture of its front legs and by its gentle swaying movement. Mantids measure 2–5 in (5–13 cm) and tend to resemble the green or brown twigs on which they perch, camouflaging them from both predators and insect or other prey. Females are known for their practice of eating males during or after mating. Mantids are harmless to humans and are sometimes useful in consuming insect pests.
