Mandrake



Mandrake, herbaceous perennial plant (Mandragora officinarum) of the nightshade family, with purplish or white flowers, a thin stalk, and a forked root resembling the human form. A native of the Himalayas and the Mediterranean, its poisonous root has been used to produce vomiting and bowel movements and as a pain-killer. In North America, the mayapple is called mandrake.
