Mandingo



Mandingo, West African ethnic group, descendants of the founders of the Mali Empire, (fl. 1240–1500). Most Mandingos belong to the Malinke group and practice tribal religions and customs in small rural villages. They are chiefly farmers and cattle ranchers and about one-fifth of them have converted to Islam. Their language, which has many different dialects, belongs to the Mande language group.
