Magyars



Magyars, dominant people of Hungary and their language (from the Finno-Ugric language group). A nomadic warrior people, originally from the Urals, they were forced into present-day Romania by the Turkish Pechenegs and then into Hungary in the 9th century. They went on to conquer Moravia, advancing into Germany until stopped by Otto I in 955. They adopted Christianity in the 11th century.
