Maguey



Maguey, plant in the agave family. The Mexican plant, which grows up to 9 ft (3 m) long and 1 ft (30 cm) wide, has long green stalks with green flowers. The pulque agave (Agave atrovirens) is used to make beverages, both pulque and tequila. In Indonesia and the Philippines, the maguey is referred to commonly as cantala, and fibers from the plant, which may grow to 30–60 ft (75–150 cm) long, are used to produce twine.
