Magi

Magi, hereditary members of the priestly class of the ancient Persian Empire. Revered for their wisdom and their ability to interpret dreams and omens, the Magi were also the acknowledged priests of the ancient Persian religion Zoroastrianism, which advocated worship of a single supreme deity. According to one tradition, the Magi kept watch for a great star that was to signal the arrival of a savior. This helps to explain the connection between the Magi and the three wise men who, according to the New Testament, were led by a star to Bethlehem, where they honored the infant Jesus with gifts.
