Gaius Maecenas



Maecenas, Gaius (70?–8 B.C.), Roman statesman famous as the patron of Horace, Vergil, and Propertius. Friend, adviser, and agent of the emperor Augustus, he was criticized by Seneca for his extravagance. His name came to symbolize patronage.
