Madrid



Madrid (pop. 3,000,000), city, capital of Spain and of Madrid province, on the Manzanares River in New Castile. A 10th-century Moorish fortress captured by Castile in 1083, it was made the capital by Philip II (1561) and expanded by the Bourbons in the 16th century. Now Spain's administrative, financial, and transportation center, it has a wide range of industries. A cultural center, its landmarks include the Prado art museum, the royal palace, and the university city.
