Madras



Madras (pop. 3,841,000), large coastal city in southeastern India. Capital city of the state of Tamil on the Bay of Bengal, Madras once served as a British outpost (17th century) and center for trade. Today it serves as one of India's important ports and commercial centers. Hindu and Christian landmarks as well as the Univ. of Madras and the British Fort St. George may be found alongside modern industry and transportation.
