Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island, Northern Michigan island in the Straits of Mackinac. First settled by Native Americans, then French missionaries, this island became an outpost for the British (1780) before its present-day development as a summer resort. Today no automobiles are allowed on the island, and ferry service transports people and goods from the mainland to either Mackinac City or St. Ignace. This island contains an ancient Native American burial ground called Michilimackinac (“great turtle”).
