Lucknow

Lucknow (pop. 1,619,100), capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh in north-central India. Founded as a Muslim fort in the 13th century, Lucknow was incorporated into the British empire in 1856. Indian soldiers seized the city during the Sepoy Rebellion in 1857, but it was reclaimed by Britain the following year. Today Lucknow combines modern offices and industries with an old commercial district of silversmith and handicraft shops.
