Long Island

Long Island, island off the southeastern coast of New York, extending east for about 118 mi (190 km) from the mouth of the Hudson River. Its width ranges between 12 mi (19 km) and 20 mi (32 km). The New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are at the western end. Nassau and Suffolk counties, which take up the bulk of the island, were predominantly agricultural until World War II but now have much residential and light industrial development. The beaches and bays of its southern shore, on the Atlantic Ocean, make Long Island a popular summer resort.
