Logan Act



Logan Act, U.S. law enacted in 1799 prohibiting private citizens from entering into negotiations with a foreign government involved in a dispute with the United States. The law was a reaction to the activities of George Logan, who in l798, attempted to negotiate a settlement to a Naval dispute with France.
