David Lloyd George



Lloyd George, David (1863–1945), Welsh political leader, British prime minister 1916–22. Elected a Liberal Member of Parliament in 1890, he served the same Welsh constituency until his death. As chancellor of the exchequer (1908–15) under Prime Minister Herbert Asquith he led in initiating British welfare legislation. In World War I Lloyd George became, successively, minister of munitions, minister of war, and finally prime minister of a coalition government. He was one of the architects of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the war. His coalition fell in 1922, when the Conservatives withdrew from it. In the 1930s he led the remains of the Liberal Party and opposed policies of appeasement toward Nazi Germany.
