Linear accelerator

Linear accelerator, device that produces beams of electrons, protons, and other charged particles and directs them against various atomic targets in order to study the structure of atomic nuclei. Linear accelerators vary in the way in which they speed up particles to produce the beams, which move in straight paths. (Other particle accelerators produce circular paths of particles.) Usually the acceleration is accomplished by means of electromagnetic waves.
