Lentil

Lentil (Lens culinaris), leguminous plant grown in warm parts of the Old World. It was one of the first cultivated crops. The seeds, which are rich in proteins, are cooked as porridge or soup. The mess of potage for which Esau sold his birthright (Genesis 25–28) was made from lentils.
