La Fayette, Marie Madeleine Pioche de la Vergne (1634–93), French writer. She is epsecially noted for The Princess of Clèves (1678), whose sensitivity and psychological realism make it the first great French novel. She also wrote The Princess of Montponsier (1622) and Zayde (1670).
