Kyoto

Kyoto (pop. 1,394,900), capital of Kyoto prefecture, Honshu Island, Japan, about 25 mi (40 km) northeast of Osaka. The national capital from its foundation A.D. 794 until supplanted by Tokyo in 1868, Kyoto is rich in architectural relics and art treasures. Still a cultural and religious center, it also has leading educational establishments and large-scale mixed industry with manufactures that include electrical equipment, cameras, chemicals, silk, and porcelain.
