Helmut Kohl

Kohl, Helmut (1930– ), German politician and chancellor (1982–98). Leader of the conservative Christian Democratic party, he succeeded Social Democrat Helmut Schmidt as chancellor of West Germany in 1982 and sanctioned U.S. nuclear missile installations there (1983). Under his leadership West Germany was reunited with East Germany in 1990.
