Lane Kirkland



Kirkland, Lane (1922– ), U.S. labor leader, president of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) since 1979. He was executive assistant to AFL-CIO president George Meany (1961–69) and secretary-treasurer from 1969. Succeeding Meany as president, he became known as a strong supporter of civil rights and national defense.
