Kim Il Sung



Kim Il Sung (1912–94), North Korean political leader, premier 1948–72, president (1972–94). Trained in Moscow, he returned to Korea as head of a provisional Soviet-supported government in 1946. His invasion of South Korea precipitated the Korean War, and only Communist Chinese intervention saved his regime. He then launched a vast industrial and military buildup.
