KGB



KGB, Committee for State Security, government organization in the former USSR functioning as a secret police force. The KGB is one of the state bodies exercising control over Soviet oppositionists. Its intelligence network keeps track of political and military activities abroad as well. Given its present name in 1953, the KGB is the successor to the earlier state security groups, the Cheka and the NKVD.
