Kentucky coffeetree



Kentucky coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioica), state tree of Kentucky. Its natural range is from New York to Oklahoma. In colonial times its seeds were used as a coffee substitute. It grows to 30 m (100 ft) and has a dark gray scaly bark. The Kentucky coffee tree is one of the first trees to lose its leaves in autumn and one of the last to open its buds in spring. Its fruit are dark brown seed pods 6–10 in (15–25 cm) long.
