Kazan



Kazan (pop. 1,103,000), capital of the Tatar Autonomous Republic in eastern European Russia. Founded in 1401, it is the cultural center for the Tatars. It was conquered by Ivan the Terrible in 1552. A major port on the Volga River, it is an industrial center.
