Kalahari Desert



Kalahari Desert, arid plain in southwest Africa, lying mainly in Botswana but extending into Namibia and South Africa. The region, 100,000 sq mi (260,000 sqkm) in area, has low annual rainfall (5–20 in/13–51 cm), seasonal pasture for sheep, and a wide variety of game. It is inhabited principally by the nomadic San (Bushmen) and Khoikhoi.
