Kaesong



Kaesong (pop. 345,600), city in North Korea near the South Korean border, about 30 mi (48 km) northwest of Seoul. It is a key agricultural and industrial hub and the site of many historic cultural landmarks. Chosen as the first capital of a united Korean kingdom (Koryo) in the 10th century, Kaesong was the country's leading city until 1392, when the ruling dynasty fell and the capital was moved to Seoul. In 1951 it was the site of the first peace talks aimed at ending the Korean War.
