Henry Martin Jackson



Jackson, Henry Martin (1912–83), U.S. political leader, Democratic representative (1941–53) and senator from Washington (1953–83). He was chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, and as ranking Democrat on the Armed Forces Committee he became a major spokesperson on national defense issues. In foreign affairs he was an articulate ally of Israel. In 1972 and 1976 he sought but did not win the democratic presidential nomination.
